It happens to even the most creative people. Not in the mood, creative juices not flowing, no energy, severe distraction; the list goes on and on for excuses to not create. Over the years I have become very familiar with the list and even invented a couple of my own excuses. Since being in the mood to create is necessary how can one combat this dreaded evil state of non creative existence?
Although I am not an expert by any means on finding the perfect state of creativity to dwell permanently, I have found different things that help turn my mood around.
1. Create more frequently. Set a time when you will allow yourself to be in your own element without other distractions then make it happen. After you have this routine in place, gradually increase the time if you can. It is an appointment with your creativity and should be treated as such. Don’t let any evil distraction invade this precious time frame including family, friends or appointments. This is difficult and I am still working on it.
2. Determine what puts you in the mood to be creative. This can vary from person to person. I discovered for me good music, nature, looking at art and especially visiting an art exhibit. It might be different for you but if you fine tune your self-awareness, you will discover the wonderful secret to your creative motivation.
3. Be aware of the negative drama that might kidnap your creativity. This varies from person to person also. For me this is stress, and personal or family situations, and demands on my time from other less enjoyable pursuits. If you challenge yourself to just let go for an hour or whatever amount of time you can allocate, you will feel better afterwards. It also works well to use one of your creative motivators that I talked about in step 2.
It takes awhile to perfect this but it is worth the time and effort in figuring it out to see the results in not only your well-being but also the gradual blooming of your creativity.
