For a while I have consistently been working on painting abstracts and collages. All of a sudden I will have the urge to be creative and return to watercolor.  Usually it is because of something I have experienced by viewing nature.  A couple of weeks ago I visited the Atlanta Botanical Gardens with a friend.  This was during early Spring for us here in Atlanta, but there were still were a lot of beautiful flowers.  Many artists like plein air painting in an atmosphere such as this but my reaction is usually to make as many photos as I can and the go through them when I get home.  I have found a process that I like to use for formulating ideas for my artwork from my photos using my IPad.  I view the photo and by using the zoom feature (finger spread or pinching in) evaluate several different areas of the photo that are interesting with design, color, and line.  I then sketch it and also make any adjustments that might be necessary to make the painting more interesting.  I also have used different filters on photography apps to give a different look to the original photo.  It is important to note that this should be used for inspiration and the freedom to add or eliminate certain details of the photo should be considered if desired.

My fascination with watercolor painting only grows as the years go by.   It is never boring and the transparency of the colors is a natural for painting nature.  I have painted flowers many times and especially orchids.  The shape, form and color are something I never tire of and find a limitless variety of choices for creative expression.
