It has been awhile since I posted my blog on the painted piano I am working on for the City of Lilburn so here is an update on my new project – painted piano phase 2. I have been trying to paint on the piano every day. When I thought about it I realized that it is really the same as painting 7 separate paintings because of the different areas that need a coordinating design to fit each area’s specific dimensions.. There is the top of the piano, 3 sections on the front, two, legs, the music stand and two sides. The tricky part is also having them match in colors and design. The roughest part was preparing the areas for the decorative painting by putting 6 coats of primer and base coat. The decorative painting has seemed like a breeze compared to that. I tried to create designs that would compliment the design structure of each area and especially the Queen Anne style of the piano. Because of the curves in the design of the piano, I felt that an organic theme would be appropriate involving nature and flowers. I chose irises because of their striking foliage and beautiful flowers and vines because I could incorporate the curves of the vines with the curve designs of the piano. I have used masking tape to protect the areas of the piano where I am leaving the original finish. I am having to use my expanded studio space which is my garage for this project and although there is plenty of room for the piano, there is inadequate light at night. Because of this it has limited my available time to work on the project. After working many weeks on the piano, I am doing touch-up work now and refining things.
Although I was not given a deadline for the painted piano project, I wanted it to be a part of Lilburn Daze, which is Lilburn’s cultural arts festival. I am in the process of finishing the painted piano and it will be a part of the opening ceremony at Lilburn Daze on Saturday, October 11, 2014. I will post another blog with pictures of the finished painted piano project and Lilburn Daze.
The piano is beautiful! Thanks for giving of your time and talent to inspire others to be creative. I can’t wait to see it.
Thanks Diana for your comment. I did finish the piano and it is now in its permanent home in Lilburn Park, Main Street, Lilburn, Ga on the stage. I just finished writing my blog about it and have lots of pictures posted and a video of a young man playing it. You can find it on my website, https://www.jancwatfordfineart.com/blog. I am going to have prits of the flowers that were on the side panels available for sale. Let me know if you are interested. The price will be $25.00 for 11 x 17 inches unframed.
