OK Mixed Media Fine Art Collage is my artwork that I created in conjunction with an online project that was a day long group project that everyone had the prompt of creating a piece of artwork depicting a body part. Since I was in a quirky mood that day I decided o use my arm with my hand doing an OK sign.  The collage pieces around it are clippings from old magazines.

Collage artwork is more difficult than what I think most people realize. It takes awhile to assemble the different pieces and especially if you are clipping them from magazines.  The pages. I go through many magazines looking for interesting images and then pull out the pages separating the page from the magazine. Then I try to organize the pieces according to the feel I am trying to give the artwork. Each piece has to be carefully cut out  and then arranged on the surface of the artwork. Once the piece is glued down, nothing can be changed so I usually try several different ideas of placement before I glue everything down.

The gluing process can be quite messy.  I have learned by trial and error how to keep this to a minimum. Very thin layers of adhesive is applied to both the surface  and the back of the piece then once it is in place also to the top of piece.  Sometimes the printing inks are not stable and the collage piece will bleed the color onto the artwork.  Also if there is too much water in the brush the piece will buckle and begin to separate into pieces.  If it does this, there is no choice but to throw the collage piece in the trash and go onto adding another piece. If the collage piece is medium to large size, air bubbles can be be a problem and have to worked out by applying pressure and a smoothing motion that encourages the air out at the edges. It is a tedious process but worth it in the end.  I enjoy it but have to be in patient mood.
