My progress with the recycled bottle caps part 2 Collage Painting was delayed for several reasons.  I was traveling last month and could not take the art project with me on the plane and the holidays also kept me from working on it regularly. In retrospect I think that this was positive though.  I have noticed that when I take some time away from one of my paintings or collage pieces before finishing them, it helps to see them with a new perspective.  The tenseness of working on something everyday often makes me blind-sighted to certain things that would be apparent to the normal observer. Another reason I was glad to take a break from this project was that the fact that the bottle caps are difficult to work with.  Of all the materials and recycled materials I have tried to use with collage, they are the most difficult.  Paint does not adhere to them easily even with layers of gesso applied first and then allowed to dry.  I also tried to add some gesso to the acrylic paint and that did not work as well as I had hoped for either.  My frustrations kept growing.

As I progressed with the collage, I also realized that I wish I had not used so many bottle caps and made them fewer in number.  I was determined to find a creative solution though, working with the many I had already glued down permanently.  After developing the design and coming up with the idea of using a limited amount of colors and painting a connecting flow of design on the top of them, I was proud of this solution only to be disappointed with the fact that each application of paint had to be applied many times to obtain the desired color value.  All considered it was an adventure in learning and I like the creative result of my determination to make it through with this piece of artwork, Recycled Bottle Caps Collage Painting Part 2.

The original is available on my website or as limited edition prints.  You can also contact me personally for more information.
