After working on botanical landscape paintings for several months, I needed a change of pace from the details and started my triptych color abstract paintings. The freedom to paint without much planning was back again. I started the first painting of three and chose to use colors of paint that are primary so as they would naturally blend into other colors when blended and over lapped. I still am in a state of fascination with rubbing in small of amounts of acrylic paint into the canvas instead of using large fluid strokes or heavy applications of thick paint. There is something about how the paint adheres to the canvas when it is rubbed in slowly that to me makes it very appealing to look at and gives a very subtle look to the texture of the paint and its transformation into other hues and tones.
When I started the first one of these three paintings, I did not have a plan, but after seeing the first painting almost completed, I decided that I would paint a triptych and paint two more paintings to go along with the first one either side by side or arranged touching like one long painting. Seeing the other two blank canvasses there that were the same size was just to tempting to not paint.
The idea with a triptych, (three paintings of the same theme), is to have a flow through from one painting to the next using the same colors and tones. I aim to have each painting stand alone with design and color principles but to also carry through on each of the next two paintings. This is a little more tricky than just painting one painting that will hang alone. Although it is not a project I desire to create regularly, I think it is a good creative exercise from time to time. It allows both creativity, challenge and unexpected outcomes.
These paintings are for sale as a group and can be hung separate or end on end together. The paintings are acrylic on stretched canvas and each painting measures 16 x 20 x 3/4 inches. If these paintings are hung together end on end they measure 48″ by 20 ” All canvasses are gallery wrapped which is wrapped and painted edges. No frame is necessary. The price for all 3 paintings is $700.00. They can be purchased in the gallery part of this website or by contacting me on the form below.
