Abstract X13 is one of the larger paintings I have attempted. It is 24″ x 36″ inches on stretched canvas. I wanted to take a very loose approach with it and started by randomly painting with just three colors of paint. The acrylic colors used exclusively were titanium white, ultramarine blue, and rose. I wanted the focus of this painting to be on texture and dimensional effects with the paint. I have experimented with using acrylic modeling paste to build up the painted areas and it works fine but I find it is confusing when planning the colors in the painting because it lightens whatever color you are mixing it with. By just using a thick application of the paint by itself, the same effect can be achieved. I built the areas of the painting up over several days in some areas. By applying thick textures of paint and then letting them dry, other layers can be added with additional texture. The blended areas have to be completed very quickly because acrylic paints dry very quickly.
This painting was great fun for me. I had never experimented to this level with thickly applied paint and I really liked the results. Learning through experiment with paint has given me more creative ideas that I plan to explore. The above photo does not show the texture adequately as viewable in person so I have recorded this video to give a close up view.
