Last week I completed a watercolor of my good friend’s chickens, The Chicken Foster Family Watercolor.  This is not the subject matter that I usually paint but when my good friend proudly showed me photos she had made of her chickens, I was taken back by the striking colorful combinations of the feathers on the rooster. She shared with me the story that the rooster was the foster chick of her hen, Genesis and that she mothered him as if she was her own.  I told her I had to paint him and quickly drew a sketch on the left side of a large sheet of watercolor paper.  My friend was so thrilled that I was painting her rooster and I started to think about painting the hen, Genesis too.  Although I had planned to cut the paper smaller and just paint the rooster, I realized I had room and so why not!  My friend was ecstatic and called me to tell me that in her excitement she went out and bought some baby chicks.  There was still space in the painting so I told her to send the photos of the chicks and I would add them also.  So as you can see, this was a haphazardly planned painting but I think it was meant to be because all the additions fit into place easily. My friend was so happy when I showed her the completed painting and I had a lot of fun painting the chicken foster family watercolor,  The chickens are happy also with a family that was meant to be after the hen Genesis lost all of her own chicks because of hungry snakes.  All is well that ends well.
