The progression of my drawings from rock star portraits has turned the corner and I am have been working on portraits of children.  I also am an author and illustrator of children’s books and the ability to draw and paint young children is valuable in both areas of art. I also decided to advance the media that I use and have started using Prisma colored pencils to add color to the portraits.  I have been using just a mechanical pencil for the rock star portraits.

I have noticed with all of the work I have been doing since June and my abstract painting project that the learning is quicker and much more progress can be seen when daily or almost daily work is being done. Knowing how to draw faces is not that difficult but trying to get a good likeness of the subject matter is much more difficult.  I have been surprised at how much easier this has been for me with consistent practice instead of just drawing a portrait every once in a while. It is a conception of space and how each person’s face is individually proportioned. This has to be constantly checked when drawing a portrait to be able to achieve a good likeness. The same principles, however also apply when drawing a landscape, still life or anything else. It is the ability to be able observe and know what you are drawing/painting and checking the proportions constantly. I have heard many times that you can’t have a good painting without a good drawing first. This is true. A drawing is like the foundation and framework for a house.  There are artists that do not have a preliminary drawing underneath their painting and sketch with a brush directly on to the canvas, but I can guarantee you that they are very experienced and know what they are doing to be able to skip the step of preliminary sketching in their subject matter. I will continue to create more Portraits of Children and post them as I progress.  I also have currently started a project of portraits of the great peacemakers.  Please leave a comment on the form below and sign up for my newsletter on the form at the top of the webpage.
